You smell the fair before you see the lights. Dust, funnel cake, livestock barns, then the carnival spinning over everything. That is the Comal County Fair. You are on the fairgrounds in New Braunfels, and you drove over from Spring Branch on purpose.
The fair runs September 23 through 27. Five days. You do not have to do all five. A weeknight is livestock barns, a plate of fair food, and a walk under the lights. Saturday is the long one. The parade is Friday morning downtown. Confirm hours, tickets, and the parade route on comalcountyfair.org before you go.
The drive is about 35 minutes, mostly Highway 46. You eat there. Corn dogs, barbecue, whatever is coming off the grills. Rodeo if that is your night. Carnival rides if friends or family came along. Lose each other for an hour on the midway and still find each other by the lights.
Leave before you are tired of it. Then you are back on 46, the noise dropping as New Braunfels falls behind you. Your own space is still yours when you get home.
The Casitas at Sun Valley has six private casitas and two geodesic domes. A geodesic dome is a good stay if you want that round room after the drive. Units 1 and 2 if friends or family made the trip. The smaller casitas if it is just the two of you. Book direct, compare the units, and take the one that fits the weekend.
