Romantic Hill Country getaway near San Antonio and Austin: where to stay for quiet and stars

  • Posted on

Ask around and most people will tell you Wimberley or Fredericksburg. Both are beautiful. But if you're really after quiet, a sky full of stars, and a real night out when you want one, Spring Branch deserves a look.

How far it is

From downtown San Antonio it's about 45 minutes, roughly half an hour closer than Wimberley or Fredericksburg. From Austin it's about an hour and 25 minutes. Either way you land in the Hill Country, with the Guadalupe River a short drive away and Canyon Lake close by.

The stars

This is the part that's hard to describe until you see it. After dinner, step outside and give your eyes a minute. The sky keeps filling in, star after star, in a way no city environment could ever deliver. Both geodesic domes have a skylight that opens, so you can bring the night inside with you. Winter nights tend to be the clearest.

A night out, then back to quiet

When you want music, Gruene Hall is 30 to 40 minutes away. It's billed as Texas' oldest continually running dance hall, with live music most nights. For an evening glass of wine, the closest is the Daniel Lane Vineyard wine bar in Bulverde, open Wednesday to Friday 5 to 9 and Saturday 1 to 8. Pontita Vineyard & Winery on Rebecca Creek Road is open Thursday and Friday 6 to 8, Saturday noon to 8, and Sunday noon to 6. Kai-Simone Winery near the Guadalupe makes a lovely afternoon stop, Friday to Sunday 11:30 to 5, with a patio and pizza. On Saturday nights through November, Tejas Rodeo puts on a rodeo and a dance. For sunset by the water, Canyon Lake is about 25 minutes out. Check current hours before you go.

Then you head back to the quiet, and the rest of the night is yours.

Your own space

You get your own place, not a hotel hallway. The domes have a multi-jet spa shower, and the casitas have spa or rainfall showers. The Casitas at Sun Valley has six private casitas and two geodesic domes. For a stargazing trip, the domes with their open skylight are hard to beat.

When to go

Midweek is the quiet secret. The wineries and Gruene are calmer, and Guadalupe River State Park makes a relaxed day on the water. From late October into mid-November, the bald cypress along the upper Guadalupe usually turns copper. Winter brings the clearest skies of the year.
