You hear the band before you see the tent. Accordion, then a whole brass line, then sausage hitting a grill. That is Wurstfest. You are standing in Landa Park in New Braunfels, and you drove over from Spring Branch on purpose.
The festival runs November 6 through 15. Ten days. You do not have to do all ten. Saturday is the long one. A weeknight is dinner, a band, and a walk through the big tent. Confirm hours on wurstfest.com before you go. The grounds sit next to the headwaters of the Comal River, which is not the same put-in as a Guadalupe River day.
The drive is about 35 minutes, mostly Highway 46. You eat there. Sausage, pretzels, whatever is coming off the grill. A stein if that is your night. People show up in dirndls and silly hats. If more friends or family made the trip, you can lose each other for an hour and still find each other by the music.
Leave before you are tired of it. Give yourself extra minutes on the way in and the way out. Then you are back on 46, the noise dropping as New Braunfels falls behind you. Spring Branch is dark in a good way when you pull in. Your own space is still yours.
The Casitas at Sun Valley has six private casitas and two geodesic domes. After the drive back, a dome is a good place to land: rolling hills through the panoramic window, a spa shower to wash the festival off, and a skylight you can open if the stars are out. Your own space is still yours.
Book the weekend that matches the festival, not a random November.
